BEIJING—Beijing-based telecom consultancy BDA China released a report called “Mobile Data in China,” which it claims is the most comprehensive analysis of the sector ever undertaken.
According to BDA China, the country’ s two mobile operators reported a combined total of 1.5 billion short message service (SMS) messages in the first half of 2001, with a 278-percent growth between the first and second quarters.
Revenues from mobile data services could grow to US$3.68 billion in 2005 among heated competition between operators for market share.
BDA China sees decentralized management at China Mobile and China Unicom as a major obstacle to further success in the mobile data sector as provincial subsidiaries go it alone on tariffs, services and procurement.
