Interoperator SMS to begin in Hong Kong in December

HONG KONG—Hong Kong’s six mobile operators announced interoperator short message service (SMS) will become available beginning 3 December.

Hong Kong’s telecom regulator, the Office of the Telecommunications Authority (OFTA), hailed the announcement. “The new arrangement will allow a customer to send short messages to other customers even if they are in different networks,” an OFTA spokesperson said. “Communications by short messages will be as convenient as voice.”

Hong Kong’s mobile carriers operate GSM, TDMA and CDMA networks, making interoperator SMS services more difficult than in markets, such as Europe, where all operators are on the same standard.
