BEIJING—NEC is having talks with Matsushita Communications Industrial to explore details of establishing an advanced cellular phone handset joint venture focusing on the Chinese market.
“Consideration is under way to jointly develop the latest generation of mobile-phone technology applied in China,” said Akiko Shikimori at NEC.
The companies would ask Chinese carriers that plan to use the wideband-CDMA (W-CDMA) standard to take stakes in the venture, which will be capitalized at US$2.42 million.
Toshiba also plans to set up a CDMA handset factory in China in January.
