India’s MTNL to begin PHS trials in Delhi

NEW DELHI, India—U.S.-based vendor UTStarCom will soon begin trials of its wireless local loop (WLL) technology called PHS in the Indian capital. The government-controlled telecom company, MTNL, operating in the New Delhi metro area, has allowed the U.S. firm to showcase the wireless technology in its service area.

The trial, involving 5,000 subscriber lines, will run for eight months and will be used to provide fixed wireless telephony in congested areas. MTNL officials said the company may select a vendor through a tendering process, if the technology is found suitable at the end of the current trials.

UTStarCom is also said to be in talks with other Indian private and government fixed-line operators interested in providing fixed wireless and limited mobility services.
