TOKYO—Sharp, a leading consumer electronics manufacturer in Japan, announced that it will launch a personal digital assistant (PDA) for FOMA, the third-generation (3G) service provided by NTT DoCoMo in Japan, during the second quarter of this year.
Sharp has been successfully selling PDA terminals under the brand name Zaurus. The new FOMA-enabled PDA will be based on Zaurus technology. Sharp has not disclosed the details of the specifications of the new PDA. However, according to some news reports, the PDA will be equipped with a keyboard, a small camera and Bluetooth functionality. Sharp last December launched a PHS phone with Bluetooth functionality for NTT DoCoMo, the first Bluetooth handset released by DoCoMo.
Although Sharp has been regularly providing PHS handsets to NTT DoCoMo, it has not provided any cellular phone terminals during the last two years.
NTT DoCoMo last October launched the FOMA service in Japan.
