Bharti to launch service in Mumbai in May

NEW DELHI, India—Bharti Telecom will launch its cellular services in Mumbai in May, Bharti Group Chairman Sunil Mittal announced on Wednesday in Mumbai.

Bharti Group’s mobile telephonynetwork covers 56 percent of the country, and the carrier plans an improved cellular footprint with the launch of services in Mumbai, Mittal told reporters after an announcement of the initial public offering (IPO) for Bharti Tele-Ventures, the group’s holding company.

Bharti would be a fourth operator offering cellular services in Mumbai besides BPL, Hutchison Max (Orange) and MTNL’s Dolphin.

Mittal said Bharti’s cellular operations have shown a 5- to 6-percent revenue growth per month during the last quarter, and its subscriber base had risen to 1.1 million customers at the end of December.
