Slovakia launches 3G license tender

DENVER, United States—The government of Slovakia announced a tender to sell three third-generation (3G) mobile telephone licenses by mid-year for around US$31.6 million each through a “beauty contest,” according to international press reports. If all three licenses are awarded, the country will see a new player competing with incumbents Eurotel Bratislava and Globtel.

The pricing is less than the 3G tenders in the Czech Republic and Slovenia, and is likely based on the failure of two previous attempts to attract a third GSM operator to Slovakia.
