Carriers, industry bodies to set up content evaluation organization

TOKYO—Three Japanese carriers and three industry associations are going to set up an organization to evaluate mobile Internet content on 28 February. The organization, called Mobile Content Evaluation System Association, will work out a system to evaluate mobile Internet content and discuss the cost allocation and how to deal with complaints from end users regarding mobile content.

The Telecommunications Ministry had urged the three mobile carriers to open their mobile sites to others, and all three mobile carriers in Japan—NTT DoCoMo, KDDI and J-Phone—declared they would open their sites. Without any third-party evaluation body for mobile Internet sites, each mobile carrier currently screens its own mobile sites. The government decided to set up the new evaluation body to establish a fair and equal basis for evaluating mobile sites.

The new association is scheduled to be set up on 28 February, and an inauguration meeting will be held on 28 March.
