WASHINGTON—The Federal Communications Commission today authorized ultra-wideband technology under what it described as very conservative technical parameters.
The agency said it plans to initiate a further rulemaking in the next six to nine months with an eye toward relaxing the new rules.
“Today the FCC working with the Department of Commerce, the National Telecommunications and Information Administration and the departments of defense and transportation, helped to create a new technology sector and has ensured U.S. global leadership in unlicensed spectrum and the next generation of wireless networking products,” said Martin Rofheart, chief executive officer of XtremeSpectrum Inc.
It is unclear how the FCC decision sits with the Pentagon, the DoT, NASA and the mobile phone industry, which raised serious concerns during the proceeding about potential interference from UWB devices to military and aviation radio systems, commercial cell phone service and GPS aided wireless 911.
