NEW YORK—EarthLink, the Atlanta-based Internet service provider, will expand the usability of its EarthLink Everywhere wireless access by making it available to Pocket PC 2002 handheld computers by May, said Jeffrey Hendricks, director of product management for devices and appliances.
In late February, the company released version 1.0 of its wireless service in support of the Palm Vx and m500 series; Handspring’s Visor Prism, Platinum, Edge, Neo and Pro devices; the Hewlett-Packard Jornada 520, 540 and 560 series; the Compaq iPAQ H3600, H3700 and H3800 series.
Version 1.0,which will be extended to Pocket PC 2002 devices next month, offers instant messaging and chat functions.
The software, equipped with encryption and user authentication, is pre-loaded with a large number of ISPs so that end users can create an aggregated view of up to 10 POP3 and/or IMAP4 e-mail mailboxes. Upon request, EarthLink Everywhere customers can receive and view e-mail attachments, and they also can respond to e-mails with canned messages.
The e-mail integrates with personal information management. Using EarthLink’s patent-pending “One Tap” feature, a consumer who obtains White or Yellow Pages directory information via the Internet can, with one click of a button, transfer that information into his own personal directory.
Version 1.0 also allows consumers to develop and modify their list of personal favorite Web sites, called “My Sites” in the EarthLink vernacular.
