Smart to offer Yahoo e-mail

MANILA, The Philippines—Leading Philippine wireless operator Smart Communications and Yahoo Southeast Asia, a leading online and wireless service provider in the region, announced the availability of Yahoo Mail for SMS to mobile-phone subscribers.

Smart mobile-phone subscribers can now access Yahoo e-mail directly from their mobile phones. The new service greatly expands the offering for Smart customers, who will now be able to send and receive e-mail on the go.

Smart mobile customers will also be able to tap into Yahoo’s global reach, featuring a network of 25 Internet properties reaching more than 218 million users worldwide.

“The Yahoo Mail for SMS service is another example of ongoing efforts by Smart to bring more value to our customers,” said Anastacio Martirez, head of Smart’s personal communications and mobile services division.

Yahoo Mobile’s short message service (SMS) and General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) products already reach 29 million mobile phones in Southeast Asia through partnerships with Singapore Telecommunications, MobileOne and StarHub in Singapore; Digi.com and TM Cellular in Malaysia; and Total Access Communication (TAC) in Thailand. The company also has agreements with several European operators.
