RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil—Cellular operator Telefonica Celular announced the commercial launch of its cdma2000 1x data and voice network in Brazil. The network, with equipment supplied by Lucent Technologies Inc., will initially service Telefonica customers in Rio de Janeiro, offering data transmission speeds of up to 153 kilobits per second.
GTRAN Wireless said it has launched its cdma2000 1x-based data card called DotSurfer 3000 for the 2.5-generation service known as Movistar Dados. The service will enable mobile users to receive live streaming events, access their e-mail and chat on the Internet with instant messaging, according to GTRAN.
Initially, 25,000 corporate customers in Rio de Janeiro will have access to the new data services.
“It allows business users from various industries such as transportation, security, energy, insurance, distribution, manufacturing and government entities, to have real-time access to their unique applications,” said GTRAN in a statement.
