STOCKHOLM, Sweden—AT&T Wireless Services Inc. and Ericsson will begin trialing a UMTS network in the Dallas area beginning later this year.
The companies, which completed a live UMTS voice call at AT&T Wireless’ headquarters earlier this year, said the network will use about 100 cell sites and operate on AT&T Wireless’ 1.9 GHz spectrum band. A recent lab demonstration of the technology provided packet data transmission speeds in excess of 300 kilobits per second.
AT&T Wireless has said it would use its 1.9 GHz spectrum to roll out UMTS services across the country, noting it currently holds enough spectrum to cover about 70 percent of its nationwide customer base.
