Nortel to supply Alltel’s 1x network

DALLAS—Alltel Corp. selected Nortel Networks to supply infrastructure equipment for the planned cdma2000 1x upgrade of its current wireless network and integrate Alltel’s recent purchase of CenturyTel’s wireless network.

The agreement calls for Nortel to supply 1x radio access and switching gear to Alltel to integrate CenturyTel’s TDMA properties in Arkansas, Louisiana, Michigan, Mississippi, Texas and Wisconsin.

“The investment in CDMA technology will allow us to support our growth in the retail business, yet at the same time allow us to continue to support roaming on the existing TDMA network,” said Chris Smith, executive vice president of network services at Alltel.

Nortel will also supply its Metro Cell CDMA base station and radio switching equipment for Alltel’s CDMA network.
