OSLO, Norway-Tele2 is reportedly in the closing stages of negotiating the return of its third-generation (3G) license with Norwegian communications authorities. Tele2 Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Lars-Johan Jarnheimer said it is likely that terms will be reached this week.
Jarnheimer confirmed that Tele2 would not build its own network and would instead compete as a virtual operator via a cooperation agreement with Telenor.
Tele2 has been repeatedly threatened with fines for not developing 3G stations quickly enough. Tele2’s withdrawal from Norway leaves two of the original licensees, former state monopolist Telenor and Telia-owned NetCom.
Tele2 and Telenor hammered out a handy exchange of services in September. Telenor gained full UMTS and GSM access in Sweden, while Tele2 gained virtual access to 3G in Norway and the opportunity to pull out of costly development.
