New Lucent chip doubles voice, data capacity

MURRAY HILL, N.J.-Lucent Technologies Inc. released a new chip the company said will work as a smart antenna for CDMA networks, doubling the networks’ capacity for voice and data traffic.

The new application-specific integrated circuit will work in Lucent’s newly released Flexent Modular Cell 4.0 base station. Lucent said the circuit can deliver an additional two-fold increase over the 1xRTT upgrade to CDMA networks, and can boost data capacity by more than 100 percent.

“The development of this ASIC is another example of how we are leveraging our spread-spectrum CDMA expertise to provide our customers with the most advanced and cost-effective solutions,” said Paul Mankiewich, Lucent’s chief technology officer and chief architect of the company’s Mobility Solutions Group. “Mobile operators that invest in the Modular Cell 4.0 and our future CDMA2000 base stations will be able to manage the ever-increasing need for voice capacity, and growing demand for mobile data services among businesses and consumers, for years to come.”
