MTN Nigeria to begin per-second billing

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa-Mobile network operator MTN Nigeria announced it will begin to bill its prepaid customers based on seconds.

Adrian Wood, chief executive officer of MTN Nigeria, said the board of the company approved the plan 11 December last year.

The announcement has been well received by Nigerians who regard the move as a concession to making communications more affordable to subscribers. Wood said that as the largest GSM operator with the largest subscriber base in the country, it has no choice but to listen to the suggestions of its customers.

No exact time has been given as to when the per-second billing will become operational, as Wood said that work on upgrading and procuring some new equipment still needs to be completed.

Wood also said that MTN is “also working continuously to make service as affordable as possible to a growing number of Nigerians.”

“I want to reiterate that it remains our opinion that just like tariffs have fallen in other parts of the world, notably Western Europe where they have fallen by about 7 to 8 percent on an annual basis, we anticipate that GSM tariffs will gradually fall over time in Nigeria,” said Wood.
