Lucent announces pair of contracts

MURRAY HILL, N. J.-Lucent Technologies Inc. signed two separate contracts, one with a New Zealand operator and the other with a Chinese carrier.

The U.S. vendor signed a five-year, $100 million contract to provide managed services for Telecom New Zealand’s cdma2000 1x mobile network. Lucent built and deployed the CDMA network, the first cdma2000 1x wireless network in Australasia, for the carrier 18 months ago.

“Managed services encompasses network design, deployment, operations, support and maintenance, and the outsourcing of this work is an important trend in the telecom industry,” said Lucent.

Lucent also signed a contract to build a provincial backbone transport network for Hunan Unicom in China.

“We are pleased to address Hunan Unicom’s growing business needs by deploying Lucent’s network transport equipment,” said Jason Chi, chairman and president of Lucent China.
