BEIJING-China Unicom said it will use Java download technology from Motorola Inc.’s 4thpass subsidiary, a move that highlights the potential of the Java download market.
Using 4thpass’ technology, China Unicom will offer provisioning and downloading services for Java-based applications. Users will be able to purchase and download the applications over the air.
Through its 4thpass subsidiary, Motorola counts Telefonica Moviles in Spain, Nextel Communications Inc. in the United States and LG Telecom in South Korea as customers.
Motorola is not the only heavyweight to jump into the Java downloading market through an acquisition. Sun Microsystems Inc. recently purchased Java download company Pixo Inc., while last year Openwave Systems Inc. purchased Java download player Ellipsus Systems. Mobilitec also offers Java downloading services.
