SK Telecom partners with Alcatel to market its mobile applications

PARIS-French supplier Alcatel Corp. and South Korean mobile-phone operator SK Telecom said they will jointly develop and market mobile applications worldwide. The companies said they will focus on mobile commerce, location-based services, infotainment and gaming services.

Under the terms of the agreement, the companies will identify, test and integrate selected SK Telecom mobile Internet services with Alcatel’s mobile service and applications platform. Alcatel will be responsible for marketing the joint applications to service providers. In the next phase of the partnership, Alcatel and SK Telecom will incubate, develop and promote the new services targeting selected markets.

The companies will first focus on a joint m-commerce solution that integrates SK Telecom’s e-cash solution, NeMo, into Alcatel’s mobile payment technology. The companies will introduce the combined product to prepaid markets such as China, Europe and Southeast Asia.

Financial details of the arrangement were not disclosed.

SK Telecom has been hailed by market watchers as one of the most innovative mobile Internet operators in the world.
