TOKYO-Japanese operator KDDI Corp. raised its profit estimate for the year by 34 percent due to strong sales of its CDMA2000 1X service. The carrier now expects a full-year profit of $864 million compared with its previous forecast of $646 million.
The operator has 10 million 1X subscribers compared with 1 million subscribers for rival NTT DoCoMo Inc.’s FOMA third-generation service. KDDI expects its subscriber figures to also be higher than its original estimates.
In other KDDI news, the carrier said it will join with Tokyo FM Broadcasting Co. to develop and commercialize a new service integrating programming to be broadcast over digital terrestrial audio network and telecommunications on KDDI’s wireless network.
The trials will be launched Oct. 10. The companies will also conduct field trails using personal digital assistants with communications functions to test various content services, including content downloads, radio shopping, electronic program distribution and survey participating.
