Unwired Australia to deploy wireless broadband in Sydney

SYDNEY, Australia-Unwired Australia Pty. Ltd. announced it plans to deploy a metro-area non-line-of-sight, wide-area wireless broadband network in Sydney, Australia.

The network deployment, which follows Unwired’s testing of a trial network in Balmain, a suburb of Sydney, will begin in the fourth quarter. The company plans to have 70 sites operational by the end of the first quarter of 2004. Unwired also plans to deploy networks eventually in other large metropolitan areas, including Brisbane, Melbourne, Adelaide, Perth and other major regional centers.

Unwired said it will use equipment from Navini Networks Inc. for the Sydney network. “Navini’s superior non-line-of-sight technology will allow us to quickly deploy a solid network, and to be able offer broadband services with the added benefit of untethered access anywhere in the service area,” said Peter Shore, chairman of Unwired.
