Esmertec raises $27M in funds

LONDON-Wireless Java company Esmertec announced it raised a significant $27 million in venture funding, with Earlybird Venture Capital, Partners Group and Sofinnova Partners leading the investment round.

Esmertec sells Java platforms to wireless device markers, technology that allows Java applications to run on the devices. The technology is based on Sun Microsystems Inc.’s Java platform, but is scaled down for wireless devices.

In other Java news, rival Java platform provider Aplix announced its JBlend Java platform is now shipping in more than 30 million phones worldwide. The U.S.-based company said it is setting its sights on Europe and has just opened a Munich office.
