Symbian to win smart-phone OS war

OYSTER BAY, N.Y.-Symbian will come out the winner in the battle for mobile-phone operating systems, followed closely by Microsoft Corp. and the Linux open source OS, according to research and consulting firm Allied Business Intelligence. However, there will be plenty of market to share, according to the firm, as smart-phone shipments will grow to 150 million by 2008.

ABI said Symbian will appeal to carriers and vendors due to its flexible and customizable nature, while Microsoft’s Smartphone operating system will appeal to business users looking for familiarity and connection to desktop computer information. Linux will represent the cheaper alternative to Microsoft and Nokia Corp.-dominated Symbian.
