MUNICH, Germany-Siemens AG said Telefonica Moviles has selected it and L.M. Ericsson to provide equipment for the second phase of its UMTS network construction, making Telefonica Moviles a new third-generation customer for the German vendor. Siemens was not involved in the first phase of Telefonica’s UMTS network deployment.
Telefonica plans to invest about $1.2 billion in its UMTS network by 2006, according to Siemens. The supplier did not provide financial details for its portion of the work. Telefonica plans to offer commercial UMTS services in 2004.
Siemens said by 2005 about 8,000 base stations will be installed; in the first phase of the network construction, about 1,100 base stations were established by end-2003. For phase two, Siemens will supply and install all the infrastructure components required to set up the UMTS radio network.
