REDMOND, Wash.-AT&T Wireless Services Inc. reported Wi-Fi expansion plans including a deal with Amtrak to provide high-speed data services in six of the railroad’s busiest train stations along the Northeast Corridor and a reciprocal roaming agreement with T-Mobile USA Inc. expanding service in a trio of airports.
The Amtrak deal calls for AWS to design, install, manage, operate and maintain Wi-Fi service in the railroad’s Boston Route 128 Station, Providence Station, New York Penn Station, Philadelphia 30th St. Station, Wilmington Station and Baltimore Penn Station. AWS noted the deployment was the single largest technology upgrade to the stations, which combined serve more than 1 million passengers every weekday.
The Wi-Fi roaming agreement with T-Mobile USA covers AWS’ network in Denver International Airport and Philadelphia International Airport and T-Mobile USA’s San Francisco International Airport network and is the first Wi-Fi roaming agreement between the two carriers. The carriers said they expect to complete integration efforts and enable roaming by the middle of this year.
AT&T Wireless also announced that customers who sign up for a qualified two-year $80 unlimited data plan on either its GPRS or EDGE network will receive a free Sony Ericsson GC-82 modem card after a $250 rebate. The carrier noted the offer will run through April 30.
