Bellwave to use Ericsson reference design

STOCKHOLM, Sweden-South Korean mobile-phone design firm Bellwave announced it will use Ericsson Mobile Platforms’ G200 reference design to develop its new GSM/GPRS products, and potentially its EDGE and W-CDMA products as well. The new licensing deal comes shortly after Sharp Corp. signed a similar agreement with Ericsson Mobile Platforms for W-CDMA devices.

“Ericsson Mobile Platforms brings vast experience, innovation, leadership and a complete platform offering,” said Ki-Gon Yang, Bellwave’s president and chief executive officer. “We selected the platform due to its rich feature set, flexibility, stability, low power consumption and small size. Furthermore, the structure of their portfolio is such that we will be able to re-use the know-how we will have gained and also easily port application suites developed in the GPRS project to future projects with Ericsson’s EDGE and WCDMA platforms.”

A variety of companies now offer mobile-phone reference designs, including Motorola Inc. and others, in order to speed the development of wireless devices.
