100 million BREW downloads highlight Qualcomm news

Atlanta-Qualcomm Inc. made several announcements at the CTIA Wireless 2004 show in Atlanta including an extensive agreement with ATI Technologies Inc. to deliver a wireless 3D gaming platform. Qualcomm’s Mobile Station Modem baseband solutions will include ATI’s IMAGEON architecture to provide a 3D gaming solution for CDMA2000 and Wideband CDMA devices.

Qualcomm said more than 100 million BREW-based applications have been downloaded by wireless subscribers since the services became commercially available more than two years ago. The company said 25 operators in 18 countries now offer BREW-based services.

The company also said it has successfully completed its three-month CDMA2000 1xEV-DO pilot program with IBM Corp. For the trial, IBM sales representatives in San Diego and Washington D.C. were equipped with CDMA2000 1xEV-DO-enabled laptops. Qualcomm said the sales reps experienced increases in productivity, lower access costs while traveling, and flexibility in responding to customers.

Further, the chip makers said Iusacell plans to deploy downloadable wireless applications and services based on the BREW solution, so subscribers can browse and download a variety of applications.

The company said it has teamed with UTStarcom Inc. in a commercial CDMA subscriber unit and infrastructure license agreement under which Qualcomm has granted UTStarcom a patent license to develop, manufacture and sell subscriber and infrastructure equipment for use in CDMA2000, WCDMA and TD-SCDMA systems.

Finally, Qualcomm said it will install RealNetworks Inc.’s wireless video technology into its CDMA chipsets, for sale to handset makers. Qualcomm said the new RealNetworks-capable chips will be available in the second quarter for CDMA 1x, W-CDMA and GSM/GPRS markets.
