PARIS-Alcatel Corp. has combined with Birdstep Technology and Gemplus International S.A. to develop, promote and market a solution for seamless service continuity between GSM/GPRS/EDGE or CDMA mobile networks and wireless local area networks.
The companies said the agreement will also apply to emerging technologies like WiMax.
Birdstep provides mobile Internet Protocol software client technology, while Gemplus makes smart card-based solutions. With its Evolium multi-access infrastructure, Alcatel will integrate both solutions.
“This collaboration will enable users of laptops and PDAs to have an ‘always best connected’ experience at any time and profit from a smart-card based secure handover between heterogeneous access networks, ensuring the highest data rate, relying on a single subscription,” said the companies.
