ExxonMobil Corp. has implemented a strict new driver-safety policy that prohibits its employees from using cell phones while driving on company business.
The company cited studies pointing to evidence that cell-phone use while driving increases the risk of accidents fourfold compared with drivers not using cell phones.
The cell-phone ban builds on Exxon’s previously implemented driver-safety initiatives. The company has signed the European Union Road Safety Charter, an initiative meant to cut the number of accidents in Europe in half by 2010. Exxon is also teaching driver safety to its fuel haulers, truck and automotive fleet drivers, as well as other taxi, bus, truck and car drivers around the world. Exxon also sponsors driver-training classes for employees and their families.
