Nextel continues solid growth

RESTON, Va.-Nextel Communications Inc. continued its strong growth pattern during the second quarter of this year adding 546,000 new customers, which was well ahead of estimates of around 500,000 net customer additions, though short of the 591,000 customers the carrier added during the second quarter of 2003. Nextel’s second-quarter growth included 68,000 new subscribers to its Boost Mobile L.L.C. operations, which was less than the 150,000 customers analysts expected the prepaid service to add.

Nextel also reported that customer churn remained steady at 1.6 percent, average revenue per user increased from $69 during the second quarter of 2003 to $70 this year and the cost per gross customer addition dropped slightly from $460 last year to $455 this year.

Total revenues jumped more than 28 percent year over year from $2.6 billion during the second quarter of 2003 to $3.3 billion this year, while net income increased from $281 million last year, or 27 cents per share, to $1.3 billion this year, or $1.12 per diluted share.
