Wi-Fi growth drives broadband adoption

OYSTER BAY, N.Y.-Wi-Fi enjoyed solid second-quarter growth, according to the latest edition of ABI Research’s “Wi-Fi Quarterly Service” report.

Growth in the sector is driving broadband adoption, as well as purchases of access points and adapters in the consumer and small-office-home-office spaces. Growth has been slower in the enterprise space, however, because consumer equipment prices have been falling more quickly than prices for enterprise-grade systems.

Until recently, security has been a significant factor in preventing wider Wi-Fi adoption, said Phil Solis, senior analyst at ABI Research. Now that 802.11i has been ratified, organizations have a greater level of comfort with the security of the technology, he said.

“With the security issue out of the way, we should see enterprise adoption continue to grow,” said Solis. “It won’t be dramatic, but it will be solid.”
