ZigBee shipments to hit 80M by 2006

OYSTER BAY, N.Y.-The market for ZigBee, a low-power, short-range wireless sensor and control technology, could see explosive growth during the next three years, according to a new study by ABI Research.

The study, “ZigBee and 802.15.4 Wireless Networks,” predicts shipments of about 1 million ZigBee devices in 2005, growing to more than 80 million units of ZigBee-equipped device shipments by the end of 2006. ABI expects the industrial sector to adopt ZigBee devices first, followed by home-networking buyers.

“First, 802.15.4b will be approved,” said ABI Research analyst Chris Lopez, explaining the growth expectations. “This extension of the basic standard will simplify and improve interoperability worldwide.

“Secondly, ZigBee IC vendors who, today, mainly target European and American manufacturers, will be ready to turn their attention to the huge markets of Asia.”
