Honolulu public-safety agencies to use AWS EDGE services

REDMOND, Wash.-AT&T Wireless Services Inc. reported that the city and county of Honolulu has placed an order for 1,600 EDGE wireless modem cards for its police, fire and emergency services officers representing the largest EDGE deployment to-date in the nation.

The EDGE cards will be deployed in conjunction with laptop computers mounted in police cars, fire trucks and other emergency vehicles. The deployment is expected to be complete later this fall.

AWS said its EDGE network provides average network speeds of around 100 kilobits per second and currently is available in more than 7,500 cities and towns and covers about 30,000 miles of highways across the country.
