Nortel, Lucent to supply Verizon EV-DO expansion

Nortel Networks Ltd. and Lucent Technologies Inc. both announced contributions to Verizon Wireless’ planned CDMA2000 1x EV-DO high-speed wireless data service launch in 11 new markets and a number of airports scheduled for Monday.

Nortel, which was the primary infrastructure provider for Verizon Wireless’ San Diego EV-DO market trial, said it has upgraded existing base stations and modules as well as provided associated services for the latest market expansions.

Lucent, which supplied infrastructure for Verizon Wireless’ Washington, D.C., market trial and earlier this year signed a $5 billion network expansion contract with the carrier, said it supplied equipment, software and services as well as data and research as part of its Market Advantage Program to the EV-DO service expansion.

Both companies were involved in Verizon Wireless’ initial $1 billion EV-DO commercial deployment plans earlier this year with Lucent garnering a $525 million infrastructure agreement and Nortel signing a two-year, $167 million agreement.
