Qualcomm, Microsoft agree on wireless streaming technology

SAN DIEGO—Qualcomm Inc. said it has entered into an agreement with Microsoft Corp. to allow Windows streaming capabilities in wireless devices.

Through the deal, consumers will be able to play back and stream Windows Media Audio and Windows Media Video content on wireless handhelds that have Qualcomm’s Qtv solution.

Devices will begin to carry this capability in the first quarter of next year, according to Qualcomm.

The companies believe this capability will provide operators with new revenue streams and rich media content.

CDMA carrier Verizon Wireless is impressed. “This agreement also encourages developers to deliver more powerful multimedia applications, driving continued market acceptance for wireless streaming audio and video content and providing consumers new digital entertainment experiences,” said John Stratton, vice president and chief marketing officer for Verizon Wireless.
