Qualcomm buys Spike Technologies

SAN DIEGO-Qualcomm Inc. said it has acquired chip design company Spike Technologies Inc. for $19 million in cash to enable it to provide third-generation CDMA customers and partners with design, sales and technical support around the world.

Bangalore, India-based Spike Technologies will bring not only chip design to Qualcomm, but also development and software expertise to complement the CDMA proprietor’s hardware and software engineering teams, according to Sanjay K. Jha, executive vice president and president of Qualcomm CDMA technologies.

Qualcomm also said it has opened a research and development center in Hyderabad, India, to support and advance its CDMA chipset development activities in the region and around the world.

The R&D center will focus on activities such as software, DSP firmware and hardware development, design, testing and technical customer support.

The engineering team will support both CDMA operators and handset makers, said Qualcomm.
