UpSnap offers text-based wireless directory service

SAN FRANCISCO-Mobile text messaging provider UpSnap launched a new directory assistance service for wireless users.

With the service, users with text-enabled handsets can send text messages with the names and locations of listings by cities, ZIP codes, area codes or airport codes. The service, which is free apart from carriers’ messaging fees, returns a phone number or prompts requesting more information.

“It sounds like a simple concept, but (this) truly has never been done before in a practical, useful way,” said UpSnap President Tony Philipp. “Directory information is available for free on the Web, yet until now mobile users have had to pay to find merchants they want to contact.”

To activate the service, users can visit www.upsnap.com and follow instructions to send messages to their phones.
