Linksys products set to speed home-networking adoption

PALO ALTO, Calif.-Chipmaker Airgo Networks said Cisco System’s Linksys unit will use its chips in high-speed networking equipment.

Airgo, which uses multiple input/multiple output (MIMO) technology, will provide chips for Linksys radio cards and wireless routers that connect to the Internet from home networks and desktops, according to news reports. Airgo said the connections will offer higher speeds and as much as three times the range of common Wi-Fi technology.

In a separate announcement, Linksys announced a new digital media adapter that will enable wireless streaming video, music and images to play from home desktop PCs to entertainment centers. The company hopes the adapter will drive mainstream consumer adoption of online, on-demand video services.

Airgo said last month that it had shipped more than 1 million of its MIMO chips, which support the new IEEE 802.11n standard.
