SAN BERNARDINO, Calif.-The county of San Bernardino in California has selected Cingular Wireless to deploy digital wireless phone service for emergency call boxes along freeways as part of the statewide Service Authority for Freeway Emergencies (SAFE) program.
Cingular will deploy GSM technology for the call boxes, which currently use analog wireless service. Each call box contains a battery-powered, solar-charged wireless phone that connects callers directly with a call center and provides location information to operators.
San Bernardino is the first county to upgrade its call boxes from analog to digital.
