Freescale, Philips make wireless chip news

AUSTIN, Texas-Freescale Semiconductors Inc. said it has unveiled a chip platform the size of a postage stamp for mid- and high-tier mobile devices. Royal Philips Electronics said it produced an EDGE cellular system solution in commercial volumes for handsets.

Known as Mobile Extreme Convergence, the Motorola platform is designed to reduce bill of materials and development efforts to deliver any device, including an MP3 player, handheld DVD player and digital camera, according to Freescale.

The chip vendor said the platform creates room for such new modules and applications as wireless local area network, global positioning system, ZigBee, Bluetooth, WiMAX and ultra-wideband.

Philip said its EDGE solution, known as Nexperia Cellular System Solution, is now available in Samsung handsets. The chipmaker said the solution allows TV on mobile, video recording and downloads, MP3 and audio files and a slew of other applications.
