NEW ORLEANS-Both Nortel Networks Ltd. and Motorola Inc. made infrastructure announcements at the CTIA Wireless 2005 show in New Orleans meant to increase Verizon Wireless’ wireless-data capabilities.
Nortel will begin live trials with Verizon Wireless next year on CDMA2000 1x EV-DO Revision A technology, known as DO-Rev A.
“Given the tremendous success and momentum of 1x EV-DO, Nortel has embarked on an aggressive program to deliver 1x EV-DO Rev A. Nortel’s DO Rev A technology will allow operators to serve more customers on the same spectrum while delivering Voice over Internet Protocol and other advanced multimedia services that enhance the end user’s experience and increase subscriber loyalty,” said Richard Lowe, Nortel’s president of CDMA.
DO-Rev A delivers peak data rates at 3.1 megabits per second on the forward link and 1.8 Mbps on the reverse link. Rev A works on a 1.25-megahertz channel.
Verizon Wireless recently began using Motorola’s expanded multimedia messaging service center, said Ed Salas, Verizon Wireless vice president of network planning.
“Motorola’s MMSC solution provides a quality experience for our customers and gives us the capacity to meet growing demand for multimedia messaging,” said Salas.
The expansion allows the solution to support more than 40 million subscribers and will enable video and picture-messaging interoperability.
“This gives mobile subscribers the power to choose what medium or combination of media they want to use to communicate-video, voice, images, audio clips, video clips or instant messaging-all available simultaneously, in real time and in a single blended message,” said Motorola and Verizon Wireless in a joint statement released at the show.
