RICHARDSON, Texas-Navini Networks and Benson Online said Tuesday they’ve teamed to establish the first personal wireless broadband network in Africa.
The new network was deployed in Tanzania, growing to 2,000 subscriber modems after a successful initial deployment in Arusha, near Mount Kilimanjaro. Benson, a subsidiary of Benson Informatics Ltd., said it is seeking a license from the Tanzanian government for voice services to be delivered over the network in the future.
A member of the WiMAX forum and the IEEE 802.16e committee, Navini has deployed more than 30 commercial networks in six continents.
“We want to reach all potential subscribers as quickly as possible,” said Naushad A. Mohammed, managing director of Benson Online. “We are focused on big urban centers like Arusha, Mawanza and Dar Es Salaam.”
