BANGALORE, India-Motorola Inc. announced it will open a research and development facility in India, a move that ups the company’s investment in the country.
“Motorola Labs’ India research center joins the Labs’ global team in creating the technology, applications and the unifying architecture to realize Motorola’s vision of seamless mobility,” said Padmasree Warrior, Motorola’s executive vice president and chief technology officer. “This lab reflects our commitment to grow India as a strategic R&D hub for engineering and product development.”
Motorola said the lab will focus on converged networks, autonomic networking, enterprise applications and embedded systems and physical sciences. It is Motorola’s 11th such lab and its first in India.
Motorola’s R&D investment in India has grown to $85 million in technology and R&D, up from $50 million in 2002. The company said it will expand such investment by 10 percent to 20 percent per year. Motorola opened its first R&D facility in India in 1991.
Motorola’s announcement comes just days after Nokia Corp. announced it will invest up to $150 million in a mobile phone manufacturing plant in India.
