MobilePro to provide Tempe wireless broadband service

CALABASAS, Calif.-The Tempe, Ariz., city council voted to award a five-year contract for a citywide wireless broadband service to MobilePro Corp., which will use Strix Systems’ wireless mesh network equipment in the deployment.

The network will provide services to residents and visitors on an annual, monthly, daily and hourly basis. The award is contingent upon the council approving the final lease agreement.

Tempe has an existing Strix mesh network covering its downtown area, which will continue to provide free Internet access to visitors.

Strix last week announced general availability of its Access/One Network Outdoor Wireless System targeted at city governments, municipalities, enterprises and multidwelling units.

The OWS is a multiradio, multichannel, multi-RF mesh solution that supports up to six radios per node. The solution provides dedicated high-speed wireless bandwidth for backhaul ingress and egress as well as client connectivity, said the company. The product is available in two versions-the OWS2400 series and the OWS3600 series.

The company already offers an indoor wireless mesh network system that supports up to three radios per node.

The outdoor product supports 802.11 a, b or g radios and operates at both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz. The company said it supports link rates of up to 108 megabits per second between nodes, and its technology requires only one termination point per 50 nodes, resulting in less physical wiring of nodes.

The company also offers management and security options for the product, including its Manager/One network management tool, which allows information technology managers to manage the entire network from a single location, and its Virtual/Strix tool, which allows configuration of separate virtual networks for public-safety, residential and guest access.

Atheros Communications Inc. provided its 802.11 a/g chipset technology for the OWS product.
