Ericsson demos HSUPA technology with 3 Scandinavia

STOCKHOLM, Sweden-L.M. Ericsson and 3 Scandinavia said they have performed successful demonstrations of enhanced uplink, also known as HSUPA technology, being standardized in Third Generation Partnership Project Release 6. Ericsson said the demonstration is the first time that enhanced uplink implemented in a live W-CDMA system based on commercial products was demonstrated over the air.

HSDPA is the first evolutionary step of W-CDMA and improves the downlink capacity and bit-rates, but Ericsson said its HSUPA technology introduces enhancements in the uplink as well. Demonstrated mobile broadband applications include e-mail uploads at 1.5 megabits per second, Voice over Internet Protocol and IP-based video conferencing. All applications are efficiently using both HSDPA and enhanced uplink technologies.

Ericsson said the system is now undergoing laboratory and drive testing. The company said HSUPA technology will be introduced on the market in line with terminal availability. Initial terminals and PC cards will be available on the market during the second half of 2006, with handsets coming in early 2007.
