Wi-Fi providers expand European presence

SANTA MONICA, Calif.-A pair of U.S.-based high-speed Internet service providers reported an expanded presence in Europe through a roaming agreement and an acquisition.

Boingo Wireless Inc. said it has singed a Wi-Fi roaming agreement with Ireland-based Bitbuzz Ltd. extending the reach of Boingo’s network to more than 50 hot-spot locations in Ireland. Boingo noted its European footprint now includes 7,000 hot spots in more than 18 countries as part of the more than 17,000 Wi-Fi hot spots worldwide accessible by its customers.

In a separate announcement, Wayport Inc. said it has acquired Copenhagen, Denmark-based NetPoint A/S, which provides broadband Internet service access to more than 120 hotel properties across 24 countries in Europe and the Middle East. Wayport, which claims more than 9,000 wired and wireless broadband locations around the world, added that NetPoint would drive Wayport’s strategic focus on expanding operations in the region.
