CHIBA, Japan-A consortium of Web-based companies unveiled an initiative to simplify Internet browsing from handheld devices.
The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) encouraged members to join two working groups working to make Web browsing easier from mobile phones and other devices. One subcommittee is charged with creating policies and best practices for content providers, the other will develop guidelines to allow Internet portals to tailor their sites to specific handsets.
“Proliferation of the mobile Web has so far failed to meet market expectations and can only be salvaged by fostering collaborative thinking and consensus among the world’s leading service organizations,” said Brian Kinane, executive vice president of MobileAware, a member organization and Ireland-based mobile enterprise software developer. “We look forward to leading the strategic direction of the mobile Web.”
