Comverse to license BellSouth patents

ATLANTA-Comverse Technology Inc. has agreed to license two patents for voicemail and call-forwarding technology from BellSouth Intellectual Property Marketing Corporation, BellSouth said late Thursday.

The deal is part of a legal settlement reached in December after the two companies sued each other over the two patents last year. Terms of the settlement were not disclosed.

“We are excited to have Comverse, the industry leader in the enhanced communications space, as a licensee of our patents,” said Bill Hartselle, managing director of patent licensing for BellSouth Intellectual Property Marketing Corporation, which is a subsidiary of the third-largest local U.S. local telephone company. “We continue to aggressively protect our intellectual property assets and look forward to working with other companies in this industry as we actively seek licensees of our patents.”

Shares of Comverse were up 5 cents to $25.03 in mid-day trading on the Nasdaq Friday; BellSouth shares were down 15 cents to $26.85 on the New York Stock Exchange.
