Ericsson buys wireless content billing supplier

STOCKHOLM, Sweden-Wireless technology company Ericsson has acquired Spanish software developer NetSpira Networks S.L. in an effort to bolster its mobile data offering, the company said Friday.

Terms of the deal were not announced.

Ericsson said it will integrate NetSpira’s technology to allow wireless carriers to provide simple charging for services including Java downloads, Internet access and multimedia messaging services. Several European operators are using technology from NetSpira, Ericsson said, and Virgin Mobile uses the platform for its U.S. business.

“Content and event-based charging in the network is being demanded by an increasing number of our customers as it enables operators to fine-tune their charging and service models to maximize revenues without increasing operational costs,” said Bjorn Olsson, executive vice president and general manager of Ericsson’s Business Unit Systems.
